In response to the growing health care needs of Cornwall, Hotel Dieu Hospital decided to add a new 100 bed addition for chronically ill patients to its existing facilities. At two stories in height, the new wing stands on a gently sloping site. The two-tone masonry walls which envelop the cruciform plan, are articulated so as to create a warm, bright and inviting image which stands in contrast to traditional hospital design. Within each cruciform extension is a cluster of patient rooms. The two-bed rooms are L-shaped, providing a separate space and window for each bed. The four-bed rooms feature a large bow window which provides ample light and a view from the beds nearest to the corridor. The nurse station is at the center of the addition with a clear view down all corridors. |

A gathering space at the main level offers the opportunity for patients, staff, and visitors to meet and interact with one another. The Loggia fills the volume created by a large skylight, and is animated by trees and a wood-frame gazebo. A serpentine glass block screen delineates an area for aerobic exercise adjacent to the exercise room. Surrounding the Loggia are a number of amenity spaces which, along with the raised planters and park benches, help to reinforce the community park-like setting. This space is the hub of activity, both active and passive. It offers a form of relief for the chronically ill patients who must live out the remainder of their lives in an institution. |
