Stratford Festival Centre Mixed-use Development Proposal

Stratford, Ontario

E.B. Kalmantis: Design Architect

E.B. Kalmantis Architect Incorporated

This historic landmark was once the home of Stratford's burgeoning railroad industry which formed the city's primary economic base. The 6,944 ha (17.2 acre) site accommodated a number of railway shops, the main structure of which has been designated to remain.

The site plan proposal for Toronto Design & Construct Corporation / AMA International Development Corp. consolidates a 43,190 m2 (464,900) sf) mixed-use development which includes 851 parking spaces. Renovation of the main structure revives the original spirit of its architectural while the functions have changed. It incorporates a retail / commercial arcade, complete with movie theatres, a railroad museum, and a hotel / convention center. Two new retail / commercial buildings on a diagonal to the arcade enable the site coverage to be maximized. An existing turntable which is centered between the old and new buildings is transformed into a forum for public performances.
